You may recognize the fellow to my left there. That's Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, the 13-time Oscar nominated cinematographer who shot Hail Caesar, Skyfall, True Grit, Revolutionary Road, No Country for Old Men, and on and on. I met him at the ASC open house while in LA attending Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography institute. Mr. Deakin's work resonates with me because of its natural aesthetic, use of wider lenses, and his fundamental approach to cinematography. I had the opportunity to interact with him through his website over the course of a few years, learning much of what I know about lighting and the art through him and that forum. Getting the chance to thank him personally for that was quite a thrill.

Vilmos Zsigmund, ASC (center-left), Brant Hadfield (camera op.) The image on the right was also quite a thrill. That's the late Vilmos Zsigmond at the monitor while I had the opportunity to operate the Alexa in his lighting class at his cinematography institute. His work in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the impression of seeing that as a kid, was the foundation for the way I see composition and visual storytelling. So to run a camera under his direction was also quite a thrill.

BIO

Brant is passionate about creating artistically beautiful, cinematic, visual storytelling.  Creating the images that evoke emotion and compel an audience is what has always driven him and continues to this day. He loves what he does, and it shows.

His career began in 1993, working seven years in broadcast news CBS and ABC affiliates, shooting and editing stories in the style of the National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA) - always thinking of story, using natural light, observing and capturing visuals that would move the audience to understand and feel.

In 2013, Brant wrote, directed, shot, and edited the multi-award winning film, The Battle of Island Mound. Commissioned by the state of Missouri, the film depicts the first-ever battle fought by African-American soldiers in the Civil War.

His first short film endeavor, The Last Legend, screened in eight film festivals nationwide, and won four awards in those festivals, including two for best cinematography.

From the very beginning, through today, meticulous attention to detail and a passion for visual storytelling is the foundation of how Brant goes about his craft.
